There's a salad in my washing machine ?

Not only am I addicted to blogs, iVillage and their message boards, Zap2it, etc etc, I'm also addicted to the whack of health, diet & fitness newsletters I signed up for. Today in my Zone newsletter they gave out this tip :

"What can you do with washed-but-still-wet salad greens? If you need to use them right away, throw the greens in a pillow case, binding the top of the case with a clip. Then use the spin-dry setting of your washing machine to whirl them dry. "

Okay, out of curiosity.... who would actually DO that ? I can't see myself dirtying a pillowcase, running downstairs, putting the spin cycle on and waiting for all this to dry... seriously. "Binding the top of the case with a clip" ? What if the clip unclips and you're left with a washing machine full of salad ? Are you all doing this ? Am I missing out ? :P

I've put lettuce in a clean dish towel and swung it around to dry it. Does that count?
I'd heard the washing machine thing before, but it sounds like an awful amount of effort to just dry lettuce....hmmm....

I'd like you to try it Nancy and take some pics of it for us :P

I HATE wet lettuce, but I don't think I would ever put it in a pillowcase and into my washer! Like you said, I wouldn't want to dirty a pillowcase!! I have done the dish towel-swing trick like Amanda, and I have also taken paper towel and hand-dried each individual lettuce leaf. Yeah, I don't recommend that. It took forever. Maybe I should just invest in a salad spinner.

I can't rave enough about our salad spinner! We use it several times a week. I especially like it because I can wash separate "batches" for DH and I: iceberg lettuce for me, "weeds" for him. LOL

I couldn't see ever putting lettuce in the washing machine but I guess I don't have a huge aversion to wet lettuce. ;)

Or you could just try a salad spinner....I have one in the basement that I haven't used because for whatever reason, I've had an aversion to salad for over a year, but I'm overcoming it! Now you just helped push me over the edge and want one!

Yeah, another vote for the salad spinner... the good thing about that one is, if you don't use all the lettuce, just keep it in the spinner and put the lid on, it keeps for a couple of days in the fridge.

OMG, I am with Lisa, Nancy! I want pictures of this process! :). And to answer your question, UMMM, no, I would not try this. But hey, I am a "buy salad in a bag kinda girl" no drying required. ;).
