The threshold is a piece of wood that goes across the barn door that holds the threshed (thrashed?) grain in while allowing wind to blow the empty straw out of the door and out of the way.<BR/>And bread was used instead of plates, the upper bit of it being eaten and the rest serving as something to hold your stew/meat/vegetables. These lower crusts (soaked with gravy) would then be given to the beggars and peasants after the meal.
